Is it really free?

Obviously you can’t just sign up for free broadband and never pay anything to Sky (www.Sky.com). To take the free broadband package you have to be a Sky TV customer, so you essentially pay for your broadband through your TV subscription. And you might also have to pay a one-off installation fee - the standard cost of which is £30 - and maybe a fee for your set-top box as well, but with same packages this comes free.

To qualify for free broadband, you also need to sign-up to Sky Talk. Sky Talk can be added for no extra cost if you want the Freetime package with unlimited evening & weekend calls to UK landlines.

What do I get with Sky free broadband?

Sky Everyday Lite is Sky's free broadband package. It offers speeds of up to 14Mb broadband and a 2GB monthly download allowance. This is best-suited for low-level users who want the internet for everyday surfing and emails with little downloading or streaming from sites like the BBC iPlayer.

What are my other options?

If you want a faster connection, or a higher download limit, you can choose to pay a little extra for your Sky broadband. For an additional £5 a month you get truly unlimited downloads - with no fair usage policy or traffic management - with the Unlimited package. Also, this is available as a standalone service so you no longer need to sign-up to Sky’s TV service to take the Unlimited package.

What else do I get?

As well as being able to take advantage of special offers and money off on installation, Sky offers all customers a free wireless router - allowing you to wire in up to four computers, and connect many more wirelessly.

Free Sky broadband customers also get a free, three month McAfee internet security trial, while Unlimited customers get a 12-month subscription. All customers also get 24-hour technical support, 10 free email addresses and access to the Sky Go online catch-up TV service.

Can I bundle my Sky products?

Because you have to take Sky TV in order to get its free broadband - and Sky Talk to qualify for the free service - it makes sense to go for a triple play bundle, which cost from just £20 a month.

There’s also a range of other bundling options available if you want to add premium channels like Sky Sports and Sky Movies, or different phone and broadband packages, so check out the Sky website for all the latest deals.

However, you will to take Sky line rental as well, so remember this when working out costs, and make sure that you allow for the extra £12.25 a month that this will cost you - and if you pay for 12 months line rental upfront you can benefit from cheaper line rental.
