O2 slashes out of bundle costs in mobile broadband refresh

O2 Broadband (www.O2.co.uk) has cut the cost out excess downloads from a massive 20p per MB to just 2.4p per MB.

The ISP also announced that it would be dropping its 24 month contracts in favour of shorter tariffs, with lower download allowances.

Its great news that O2 has cut the cost of its excess downloads

New customers signing up to the ISP will only be able to choose from 1GB or 3GB monthly download limits, ditching its generous 10GB offering. However, existing 10GB customers will not be able to take advantage of the new out of bundle price cut.

Standalone mobile broadband customers will have the option of flexible rolling one month contracts or 18 month tariffs, with the long 24 month contracts reserved for those taking one of its free laptop deals.

One month customers can buy an O2 dongle for just £20.

O2 also announced some new tethering bolt-on deals that allow customers to use their mobile phone as a dongle to access the internet on their laptop.

iPhone customers will be offered a £2 daily bolt-on with a 500MB allowance, though they will only be charged for those days that they use their tethering service, as well as a monthly 3GB option for just £10 a month.

Users with other compatible mobile phones will be able to sign up to a 1GB tethering bolt-on for £10 a month or a 3GB allowance for £15 a month.

Michael Phillips, Broadbandchoices.co.uk product director, said: “Its great news that O2 has cut the cost of its excess downloads - which were the most expensive on the market - and is responding to customers who want value for money without a long contract.

“Flexible mobile broadband plans are becoming increasingly popular as data allowances are often the same as those on long contracts and the cost of buying a dongle has fallen massively over the past year.”
