Virgin Media to boost broadband connections

Cable provider Virgin Media has announced that it will upgrade all of its current 2Mb broadband customers to its faster 10Mb service.

Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) recently withdrew its M Broadband package for new customers, though millions of people are still signed up to the up to 2Mb package.

"Our entry-level broadband product is now twice the speed of comparable services"

Virgin Media now offers three packages, L, XL and XXL Broadband, at speeds of up to 10Mb, 20Mb and 50Mb respectively.

Current 2Mb customers won’t be charged any extra for the upgrade and won’t have to sign a new contract.

For new customers signing up to Virgin Media’s 10Mb broadband package, the standalone monthly cost is £15 for the first six months, £20 a month thereafter. For customers bundling the L Broadband with Virgin Media’s £11 a month home phone, the cost drops to just £14 a month.

“The migration of customers from 2Mb to 10Mb is expected to take place from May and represents the largest-scale speed upgrade ever to take place in the UK,” said Virgin Media.

Neil Berkett, Virgin Media chief executive, said: “Our entry-level broadband product is now twice the speed of comparable services and, with our new 10-20-50 range, we clearly offer the highest quality broadband service in the UK.

“The migration of millions of 2Mb customers to 10Mb is only possible because of the power of our next generation network and is just one example of how we are creating exciting propositions for consumers which provide transformational experiences and go way beyond their expectations.

“Coupled with our recently launched 50Mb service, we are proactively developing the UK’s broadband market, driving consumer expectations and the demand for high speed broadband services,” he said.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “No doubt Virgin Media’s 2Mb broadband customers will be delighted to hear that they will be upgraded to the company’s significantly faster 10Mb broadband package.

“This upgrade will make internet television services such as the BBC iPlayer, Channel 4’s 4oD and even YouTube far more accessible, as well as opening up a host of other benefits that super-fast broadband can bring,” he concluded.
