Broadband Speed League Table - April to June 2008
So this is it, the ultimate test of speed!
While many providers will promise you supersonic broadband to convince you to sign up for their packages, what speeds are they actually achieving?
Using the results from our downloadable speedtester, we have calculated the average speed of each provider and we are proud to bring you our ultimate speed league table.

This table uses data collected from April to June 2008 and uses data only from providers who have done 3000 or more tests over the year. None of the results have been deleted, adapted or manipulated – this table displays honest results and allows you to see the truth behind your ISP’s claims.

What these statistics also show is the the UK GOVERNMENT watchdog OFCOM is failing the consumer. As they will tell you "the only complaints they act on are those from within the industry".
And do they even do that errr NO! BT Wholesale issued instructions ( mistakenly) to cease my Internet connection when the only people allowed IN LAW to do that is my ISP. After much fighting with everyone BT/VIRGIN/OFCOM I eventually got a grudging apology and and just a refund from BT did Ofcom help err?? NO!
Like everyone else here I receive rubbish( and deceitfully described broadband speeds, in spite of living within a few hundred yards of one of the most modern telephone exchanges in the UK - Sep 3 2008 6:35AM

saw the 13 providers and the results and I notice U.TV is not mentioned I am changing to Talk Talk and I hope I have better uploads and downloads from them and also a faster P.C.as my laptop has become so slow and I've tried different things which yous suggested but nothing helps none of the 13 providers named are that powerful so what do we do - Aug 26 2008 2:10AM
I agree with Polly from leamington spa, that BT is thebiggest waste of broadband on the planet .i get 0.45 average download. When i tried to explain to them that with another ISP i was getting an average of 4.2 download speed over the same phone line and from the same exchange , they could not answer me . And the response from them is damn useless,.I would not recommend BT broadband to anyone. - Aug 19 2008 9:20PM

It is a good bet that the telephone line in the premises is not connected correctly .
remember that two wires are used for speech transmission the third wire for bell return if these are not correct the filter will cause jolly poor speed. - Aug 16 2008 5:06PM

I wasn't expecting 8mbps when i signed up to BT TotalBroadband as my computer is upstairs and the entry BT point is downstairs,but i might as well be back on Dial-up,as the best result on the Speed Tester is 0.57,the average forJuly was a miserable 0.47,so far August's average is 0.36.What exactly am i paying for?Contacting BT is a complete waste of time,all you get by phone or e-mail is a standard response,in other words they don't know or care!! - Aug 16 2008 4:31PM
They're all underachieving, every last one of them. No UK broadband user should be remotely impressed by this table.

I would assume that Namesco (my ISP) is telling the truth when they say the poor speed is down to the BT line. Never had the mythical 8meg; 3 is usual here. Used to be 5+. I wonder if their contention rate is stretched beyond their claim!
It would be helpful if their "helper" would not assume I'm a fool by telling me that I need to change filters and connect direct to the master socket when I know right well that by rebooting my modem I get an increase to 3mb from just 80kb. Hey Ho!!! - Aug 12 2008 4:10PM

I signed up to BE with promised speeds up to 24MB. I am pleased in general with the speed improvement and I regularly achieve 11-12MB although this is much lower than I expected. However if I use my conection to access my workplace via a vpn, the connection is regularly throttled and hangs for minutes at a time. I have tried all suggested options includeing disabling firewalls and connecting using the BE provided modem. The support has been really poor so I will be considering a change as the speed is of no benefit if I cannot use it for my work. - Aug 12 2008 11:20AM
