ADSL broadband speeds up

(16-05-07) - BT Wholesale (www.bt.com) is tweaking the settings for customers with broadband at speeds of 250Kb to 2Mb, which should lead to speedier downloads. According to a report on ThinkBroadband.com

If you’re with BT for broadband, you could get as much as an extra 200Kbps out of your connection, and it won’t cost you any extra. Customers who live furthest away from BT exchanges are most likely to benefit, as these are the households that currently have slower connections that could do with a boost.

These changes have been made to benefit those with services like BT Vision, as these households will need a higher quality connection with a greater capacity for bandwidth.

If your phone line is broadband enabled, it will have two settings: the basic speed your modem connects at, and another setting called the IP Profile. The IP Profile controls the speed at which data can be downloaded, and this setting can be increased without increasing the basic speed.

Analysts at ThinkBroadband.com have commented, “While the changes will not break speed records for those on long lines, any extra speed is welcome. With ADSL2+ pencilled in by BT Wholesale for 2008, we suspect that these tweaks to the IP Profile may be the largest speed boost those living a fair distance from their exchange will see for some time.”

Chris Eagle, Commercial Manager at www.broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: “Although this is obviously being done for the benefit of BT Vision customers, we’re glad that broadband customers are benefiting too. I just hope that BT doesn’t increase broadband prices to cover the cost of its digital TV service.”
