About Virgin Media

Virgin Media uses fibre optic cable technology to deliver superfast broadband at speeds of up to 50Mb - currently the UK’s top download speed.

As well as its innovative broadband packages, Virgin Media also offers digital TV, home phone deals, line rental, mobile phone contracts and mobile broadband - the widest range of products available from any one ISP.

The Virgin Media broadband service

Using its cable network Virgin Media is able to deliver superfast broadband packages across the UK. It currently offers three different speeds; 50Mb, 20Mb and 10Mb - having begun upgrading previous 4Mb customers to 10Mb from May 2009. All three packages come with “unlimited broadband” downloads with fair usage policies that vary from one package to the next.

Because Virgin Media owns its own cable network and uses it to deliver your broadband, true standalone broadband packages are available - where you don’t even have to pay for line rental.

Alternatively, customers can bundle their cable broadband with a range of other products, including home phone calls and line rental, digital TV, mobile broadband or a mobile phone contract.

You can find out how Virgin Media customers rated their broadband service in our Virgin Media broadband customer reviews.

Virgin Media broadband benefits

Faster broadband speeds are a big attraction when it comes to Virgin Media, allowing customers to download music and movies at faster speeds than ever before.

As well as superfast downloads, Virgin Media’s broadband packages come with some innovative extras.

These include a free monthly allowance of digital photo prints for a year, free online storage and data backup so you need never worry about losing precious photos or family videos, and the ability to share files online with friends and family.

Our expert’s verdict

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Virgin Media is definitely the fastest way to get online and will always come out on top when it comes to download speeds.

"Its digital TV service has the best playback offerings, with video on demand as well as the BBC iPlayer and ITV catch-ups direct to your TV.

"However, customers should check out-of-bundle call charges as these can be quite costly. Virgin Media’s customer service should also be taken into account as it doesn’t always come out on top in customer satisfaction surveys."

Though download speeds may be as good as any other it is important to remember that this is not the only consideration. If you plan on playing games online be aware that Virgin has high latency and high jitter. This means that although the download speed might be high, it takes a long time for your system (computer, PS3, Xbox) to send AND recieve information over their network (akin to turning on the tap and having to wait for the water to come out even though a lot of water may come out when it finally does). In addition to this the amount of information lost (packet loss) is so high that for more than 50% of the time it is pointless to try playing online. Overall, I would not recommend their service as not only is their cable broadband unreliable and poor quality, Virgin also lacks the interest in improving service for their existing customers to the point where I will be switching even if it costs me money. - Mar 8 2010 3:43PM

Im on virgin media and i get a great package with them!!

Im on 50mb broadband and it works perfect!
i also have TV package M which is good enough for my needs.
Also i have the phone line with free weekend calls which is size M i think.

All for a price of £49 a month. Hows that for a deal? Been with virgin media for around 4 years now and i value them highly.

Virgin are great. I get 1.65mbps upload on 50mb with them and its constant 50mbps sometimes i have hit 65mb

Hopefully the 200mb connection there testing in kent will be a free upgrade for the 50mb users :P

I recently emailed Virgin Media about my broadband speed, and pointed out my modem was 'ancient'. They agreed and sent me a new modem. Since this has been re-installed, my speed has not improved; my screen freezes, or error messages appear. Yet, compared to the problems my relatives have had with Skye I still wish to persevere with Virgin Media (better the devil you know - as they say!) - Aug 2 2009 7:03PM

i am considering going to virgin for the following reasons
1 my current phone socket needs to be replaced a new bt line instaled can be expesive
2 the speed offered by virgin seems good
3 i like the thought of iplayer
i am thinking of the following package
b/band xl (good anti virus package).... tv m...phone xl....(apart from calls to mobiles this allows me to know what the bill will be)
v+ hd box. my one concern is the cost of calls to mobiles as this can work out expensive if not kept under control, and with a teenage girl in the house that may be hard. have you any ideas how to keep the cost of mobile calls down.. thanks
