Background - UK Online (www.UKonline.net) has long been an advocate of local loop unbundling (LLU), where providers install their own equipment in the local BT exchange, allowing them to provide faster connections and bypassing BT as the middleman where they have unbundled particular exchanges.
Awards - In 2006 UK Online won the “Best Light Broadband provider” award at the Internet Service Provider Awards (ISPAs) and was runner up in the “Best Portal” and “Best Sumo Consumer Broadband” categories.
In 2005 the ISPA judges awarded UK Online a Commendation for Innovation, for its dedication to LLU and for delivering “fast and reliable internet access to the UK across the board, and for impressive innovations in speed”.
UK Online also won the “Best Metered Dial-up” award and was a runner up in the “Best Unmetered Dial-Up”, “Best Light Consumer Broadband” and “Best National Consumer ISP” categories in 2005.
Suitability - Although UK Online offers a range of package speeds, their most competitive one, by far, is their very fast up to 22Mb connection which is great for high end users downloading large files, gamers or people who connect to the office remotely.
Our verdict - Because they’re now owned by Sky, who is facing excessive demand, there’s always the possibility that UK Online customers will find their high speeds falling if extra bandwidth is needed for Sky’s new customers. They shouldn’t be ruled out by any means but customers should compare them to providers who offer similarly high speeds.
