Background - Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com)launched its broadband and digital TV service in February 2007. As a merger of ntl:Telewest and Virgin.net, Virgin Media is today one of the top ISPs in the UK. They offer a “quadplay” of bundled services including broadband, home phone, digital TV and mobile phone.
Awards - It’s too early for Virgin Media to have really won awards, but here is a list of awards won by ntl:Telewest and Virgin.net at the 2007 Internet Service Provider Awards (ISPAs)
ntl:Telewest won the “Best Consumer ISP” award and was runner up in the “Best Dial-Up” and “Best Portal” categories.
Virgin.net was runner up in the “Best Consumer Host”, “Best Portal” and “Best Consumer ISP” categories.
Suitability - Virgin Media is great for people who want the ultimate in bundling or who want to strip it all down and just go for broadband. As well as offering broadband combined with home phone, digital TV and mobile, they’re also the only provider that doesn’t require a home phone line to supply a broadband connection. Because of this, you only need to pay for the broadband if that’s all you want, and at the moment they are offering a 2Mb connection for only £10 a month for a year - and with no line rental to pay on top, this is by far the cheapest you’ll get.
Virgin Media is perfect for anyone who doesn’t want a phone line they won’t use - who could try using VoIP to make calls from home instead. They also have a reliable broadband service and because they use cable rather than the old BT copper wire network you’re more likely to get a faster connection too.
Our verdict - Virgin Media provide a really good service, combining loads of special offers with generally low prices. And anyone wanting to use VoIP at home will love Virgin Media.
