About BT home phone

BT's network reach, unlike many other providers, extends to virtually the whole of the UK so for some of the population, particularly those in more rural areas, BT may be the only option for phone and broadband.

Although BT has consistently held the largest share of the fixed-line (home phone) market, this share has been declining over the years as competitors began to offer viable alternatives.

BT calling plans

BT currently offers three different calling plans: Unlimited Weekend Calls, Unlimited Evening and Weekend Calls, and Unlimited Anytime Calls. All packages include calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers during the relevant period and come with a 12 month contract.

Customers have to pay for BT line rental on top of the cost of the package, however, you can reduce the cost by paying for 12 months line rental up front.

BT's line rental and calls charges are not the cheapest on the market, but when bundled with broadband and TV you may be able to save money compared with paying for separate services from different suppliers.

All phone packages come with BT Privacy at Home - which includes Caller Display, and BT Answer 1571 voicemail - free with your plan when you make two calls a month.

Take a look at some of the packages on offer from BT (www.BT.com) in the table below, and compare prices to see if you can reduce your home phone and broadband bills.

BT line connection

Connection is free for customers taking a BT broadband or TV package. For customers taking just a phone package, the connection charge could be as much as £130, however, there is often a special offer available which reduces this charge significantly.

If you are unsure whether you already have BT sockets in your home, BT can perform a line check for you as you start your order.

If you do not have an existing BT landline, it takes around 14 days to have your landline connection installed, and a little longer if you are also ordering broadband and TV.

BT bill payment

There are a number of ways to pay your BT bill. You can:

  • set up a monthly payment plan - pay a regular set amount each month on a day you choose
  • pay your whole bill automatically by direct debit when it is due

Alternatively, you can pay by credit or debit card - online or over the telephone, make a bank transfer, send a cheque by post, or pay using your BT Payment Card anywhere that displays the yellow PayPoint sign. You will need to have your bill and barcoded payment slip wtih you.

It is important to note customers choosing not to pay by Whole Bill Direct Debit or Monthly Payment Plan will be charged a payment processing fee.

It's important to note that customers who choose not to pay by direct debit or by monthly payment plan will be charged an additional payment processing fee.

You can access you bill online and set up direct debits by signing up to My BT.

BT SmartTalk

BT's SmartTalk is an app that allows customers to access their BT calling plan from their smartphone meaning they can save money on expensive mobile calls like 0845 numbers, reduce the cost of calls home from overseas, and even make calls without using any Pay-As-You-Go mobile credit. You can connect to your SmartTalk app when you're at home - via your wireless BT Home Hub, or when out and about - using a Wi-Fi connection, or even on your mobile 3G or 4G connection in the UK.

Up to five devices can also benefit from using the BT SmartTalk app to so you can make sure your family are covered too.
