What is Direct Save Telecom?

Direct Save Telecom, which is a trading name of Utilities UK Ltd, has been in operation since 1999 as a British owned independent phone service provider. In addition to landlines, Direct Save offers both home and business broadband packages.

The company has a UK-based call centre that's open 24 hours a day and will deal with every aspect of your home phone service, including any faults that occur on the line. Direct Save prides itself on being "dependable" and offering a reliable service.

As is the case with many UK providers, Direct Save delivers its service through the Openreach network maintained and operated by BT.

Direct Save calling plans

There are three calling plans to choose from, each offering free calls to UK landlines - on evenings and weekends, weekends only or anytime depending on which option you take.

Customers are also required to pay Direct Save's line rental, which is cheaper than that of most major providers, including BT (www.BT.com), TalkTalk (www.TalkTalk.co.uk) and Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com).

Extra discount is available to customers paying for 12 months of line rental upfront.

Direct Save extras

Customers can also benefit from Direct Save's wide range of special call features.

These include three-way calling, unauthorised call barring - to block certain types of outgoing or incoming calls - and the Answer 1571 service, which offers to take a voicemail message when no one picks up or the line is engaged.

Each of these costs a few pounds extra per month and will be added to the Direct Save bill.

Direct Save connection

Switching to Direct Save is usually quick and hassle-free. If your property already has an active telephone line, there should be no interruption to your service and you should be able to keep your existing phone number.

If you already have a phone line but it needs reactivating, Direct Save will do this for you free of charge provided you sign up for 18 months. It usually takes around 24 hours from the time the order is placed for the phone line to be reactivated.

Should you need a new line installed, Direct Save can take care of this for you, but you will have to pay for an Openreach engineer visit. You new line installation fee depends on the length of contract you choose.

Direct Save payment

Customers will receive a monthly bill from Direct Save Telecom, which they can pay by direct debit. A line rental discount is available to customers who pay for 12 months upfront.

As standard, Direct Save calling plans work on a 'rolling' monthly agreement. The only exceptions are line reactivations and installations, which are subject to an 18-month contract.
