Plusnet started out in 1997 offering dial-up at speeds of just 56Kb, and has grown to provide broadband to more than 500,000 customers and offer bundled packages including home phone, line rental and VoIP internet telephone calls.

Plusnet currently offers one of the UK's cheapest standalone broadband packages, but it isn't just about cheap broadband. Plusnet also offers a high-end package and a range of home phone bundles.

The Plusnet Broadband service

Plusnet (www.Plus.net) offers two standard home broadband packages; Essentials and Unlimited. Its Essentials package comes with speeds of up to 16Mb broadband, a 10GB download allowance and free overnight downloads between midnight and 8am, while Plusnet Unlimited comes with up to 16Mb broadband and an unlimited download allowance.

Plusnet also offers superfast fibre optic broadband packages. Much faster than traditional broadband through the phone line, Plusnet's fibre packages offer speeds of up to 38Mb and up to 76Mb, and come in four varieties - Essentials Fibre Broadband with either inclusive weekend and evening calls, or anytime calls, and Unlimited Fibre Broadband - again with either weekend and evening calls or anytime calls.

The main differences between Essentials Fibre Broadband and Unlimited Fibre Broadband are the monthly usage limits and the connection speed. On the Essentials Fibre packages, you get 40GB downloads a month at speeds of up to 38Mb. The Unlimited Fibre offerings have no usage limit and offer speeds of up to 76Mb.

Plusnet Broadband benefits

Over the years Plusnet has won a host of awards for its fast, reliable service and high standards of customer satisfaction, making it one of the most popular small ISPs.

Plusnet also offers one of the cheapest standalone broadband packages on the market, and although it comes with a set 10GB monthly download allowance, it is a great offer for anyone on a tight budget - and you can always do your downloading at night when it won't come out of your monthly allowance.

You will have to pay a fee to activate your service, but once you're connected you'll be able to cancel your connection whenever you need to - with just 10 day's notice. You can either use your own equipment, or pay for a wired, or a wireless router, from Plusnet.
