Safe Downloading

Security is a must if you’re downloading music and films. Learn more about safe, hassle-free downloading here.

Download without risk

Downloading music, video and software files is one of the biggest advantages of having a broadband connection. It’s important to know the risks if you want to make the most of downloading opportunities, as downloadable files are one of the main sources of dangerous computer viruses.

How can I make sure files are safe?

The first step should be to download from a reputable, legal site that carries anti-virus measures. These include the following:

  • iTunes
  • Napster
  • Virgin Digital
  • Tesco Downloads
  • AudioJelly
  • HMV
  • MSN

You should try to restrict your downloads to files that have been tried and tested by other users. If you have a choice, select a file that has been reviewed. Never download files that have been emailed from addresses you don’t recognise.

How can I scan for viruses before I download files?

There are various measures you can take to avoid viruses when you download files. The first step should be to install a good firewall. See Firewalls: The Basics, and Firewalls: The Technical Bit for more information on what a firewall is and how to get hold of one. This will help to protect your PC, but you should also install plenty of anti-virus software to make sure you’re safe. Some reliable anti-virus packages on the market include:

  • Norton Anti Virus
  • McAfee Virus Scan
  • ZoneAlarm Anti Virus
  • Steganos Anti Virus
  • Panda Platinum Internet Security
  • Sophos Anti Virus
  • Trendmicro PC-cillin

Spyware can also get onto your computer through downloaded files, and this can keep track of your computer use, recording passwords, codes and even bank details. See Spyware Protection for details of how to keep your computer safe.

Do I need more security measures if I have a wireless network?

You’ll need wireless encryption to protect your network, but you’ll also need a firewall and anti-virus software just like a normal wired network. You should also consider anti-spyware software to prevent hackers from installing spyware onto your computer. Take a look at Protecting Your Wireless Network for more details.
