The average Brit receives almost 400 spam email and text messages a month according to new research.
However, the survey also revealed that a massive 90 per cent do not use a junk mail filter - which come free with most email providers - to sift out spam emails.
Although most saw spam as simply a nuisance, with the majority of such emails being sales, phishing or pornography, some can still contain viruses and trojans that can damage your files and access your information.
Despite this, 14 per cent of people admitted to acting on or responding to spam messages, with the figure rising to 17 per cent for the under-20s.
The research also revealed that around a quarter of people feel that spam is a danger to young people and that their email provider should do more to warn users of the dangers of spam, such as phishing emails that aim to trick people into passing on sensitive information like eBay and PayPal passwords.
A further 20 per cent said that they had no idea how to stop the torrent of spam emails they receive every month.
Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Although there is little that you can do to completely halt spam messages, you can very easily set up a spam filter so that all unwanted emails go into your junk folder.
“Ensure that you have anti virus software installed and that it’s always up to date to protect you from the latest threats and never open attachments from addresses that you don’t recognise.
“Finally, remember that your bank, eBay or PayPal will never ask for your password or online login details - these emails are phishing for your information and you should never respond to them,” he warned.
