Switching worries prevent people saving

(03-01-08) - While one in four broadband users are planning on switching their contract in 2008, new research shows that many people still can’t be bothered, despite potential savings of up to £141.60.

An ICM survey for BroadbandChoices.co.uk showed that although 69 per cent of consumers said that they would change supplier if they were offered a cheaper package, and 51 per cent said they would do so if their new provider could offer faster connection speeds, it also showed that even just after the expensive festive season, a large number of consumers are loath to switch.

The main reason for not taking advantage of the money-saving benefits of switching was that people were worried about getting tied into another lengthy contract, with 43 per cent of respondents citing this. However, a further 35 per cent were mistakenly convinced they wouldn’t get the same level of deal or package elsewhere, while 29 per cent simply couldn’t be bothered.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “It seems that consumers are still baffled by the broadband minefield. Switching broadband provider can potentially get you a faster internet connection, better service and it can save you money. Moreover, if consumers shop around, it needn’t mean entering into a punitive long-term contract. Consumers should act now in order to get the best deal for 2008.”

Customer service is another area of concern for consumers, where Ofcom recently announced a four per cent drop in provider satisfaction levels since 2006, and 36 per cent of respondents said they would consider switching for improved customer service. “PlusNet (www.Plus.net) is an excellent example of an ISP that has award winning customer service and does not have a contractual tie in,” said Mr Phillips.

“Alternatively, customer service levels are also improving at TalkTalk (www.TalkTalk.co.uk) where they offer the most competitive phone and broadband bundle in the UK. Sky (www.Sky.com) broadband and digital TV bundle also offers excellent value and has won customer service awards despite being relatively new to the broadband market,” he added.
