Three mobile broadband

Part of a new generation of broadband connections, Three offers mobile broadband packages so that you can take the internet with you wherever you go.
You don’t have to be a Three mobile customer to use Three’s mobile broadband service and it even offers a pay-as-you-go option for occasional use.

Three mobile broadband

Three cut its prices and launched a selection of super-cheap mobile broadband packages in 2007, with prices as low as £8.51 a month for businesses, and £10 a month for consumers for a 1GB allowance.

This shook up the mobile broadband market, finally making mobile data downloads affordable. At the time of launch, John Penberthy-Smith, marketing director at 3UK, said: “Mobile Broadband from 3 means you can take the internet with you wherever you are. We've priced it to make it outstanding value for money; accessible to everyone, not just men in grey suits.”

What is Three’s coverage like?

The top speed available on the Three network is currently 2.8Mb but this will soon be boosted to a top speed of 7.2Mb.

The UK’s entire 3G network currently covers around 90 per cent of the UK, and at the end of 2006, Three joined forces with T-Mobile to develop a turbo-charged network. However, you should still check the network coverage in your area before you sign up. You can do this online at Three.co.uk or in a Three store.

You can check coverage in your area on Three’s website, or in any Three store.

Three’s broadband packages

Three offers three pay-monthly mobile broadband packages with fair usage download limits of 1GB, 3GB and 7GB and additional data costs of 10p per MB. You also have a choice of three contract lengths at 12, 18 and 24 months, and the length of your contract will determine whether or not you have to pay a one-off cost for your modem - or “dongle”.

Three also offers three pay-as-you-go add-on options. You will have to pay full price for you dongle (currently £69.99, normally £99.99) but you’ll then be able to add on any of the three packages on a month-by-month basis. As with the standard contracts, these come with data allowances of 1GB, 3GB and 7GB, costing £10, £15 and £25 a month but data outside of your allowance will cost you £1 per MB.

Is it right for me?

Although mobile broadband offers amazing freedom and is great for anyone who doesn’t want to pay around £11 a month for line rental or have a fixed-line broadband service, the cost of downloading is still too high for mobile broadband to really replace home broadband services.

However, for anyone who wants broadband on-the-go and who doesn’t plan on downloading the entire second series of Lost, Three’s mobile broadband is cheap, reliable and soon to be even faster.
