Unlimited broadband is everywhere - but what does it mean? Read through the small print with our guide to unlimited broadband.

What does it mean?

“Unlimited broadband” packages have no download limit. Download what you want, when you want including movies, video clips, music and online gaming without getting charged for over-use. They are often - with two notable exceptions - subject to a fair usage policy, however.

Virgin Media broadband

All Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) broadband packages come with unlimited downloads.

Furthermore, Virgin Media's 50Mb XXL broadband package has no traffic management - this means that users on this package always will experience the fastest available speeds. Virgin Media is the only broadband provider that offers 50Mb broadband in the UK.

BT Broadband

BT (www.BT.com) offers unlimited broadband only on its Option 3 plan. This package comes with download speeds up to 20Mb per second, and is subject to a fair usage policy and network management.

BT acknowledges that customers classified as very heavy users will experience significantly reduced speed at peak times (typically 5pm-midnight every day but these times may change depending on the demand on the network) for a period of 30 days, or for as long as very heavy use continues.

According to BT (www.BT.com), this affects less than 1 per cent of all customers - and is unlikely to you.

Sky Broadband

Sky (www.Sky.com) also offers unlimited broadband without a fair usage policy – however, this offer is only available under its Broadband Max package. Call Sky on 08442 410 582 to find out more.

Sky Broadband generally comes with digital TV as standard – you can also get your home phone service from Sky if you want to. Sky has the widest number of TV channels available of all the UK's digital TV providers.

Sky (www.Sky.com) was highly commended for Value for Money in our 2010 Broadband Customer Satisfaction Survey. It also scored high for Speed, immediately behind Virgin Media.

What's the best package?

If you download videos or music on a regular basis, or simply share your connection with others at home, unlimited broadband will buy peace of mind. Visit www.BT.com, www.Sky.com or www.VirginMedia.com for more.

However, if you only plan to use the Internet to check your emails, or read the papers, you should go for a package with a set download allowance. Broadband deals with a 10GB monthly allowance could be just right for you. Why not compare broadband deals in your area with our Ofcom-accredited comparison service?
