Virgin Media introduces mobile broadband

Garnet Roach garnet@consumerchoices.co.uk

Cable provider Virgin Media has become the latest ISP to offer mobile broadband (01-10-08).

From today, customers can sign up to the 3GB Mobile Broadband package for £15 a month on an 18 month contract. You’ll get a free USB modem stick and as with all mobile broadband packages, you won’t need a landline to get online - saving you at least £126 a year in line rental alone.

"Now customers can enjoy our broadband both at home and when on the move"

“The launch of our Mobile Broadband product means UK consumers can now get all of their broadband needs from the UK’s leading broadband expert,” said Neil Berkett, Virgin Media CEO. “We’re perfectly placed to offer advice on the best broadband packages available, across a range of gadgets and speeds. Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) already provides the fastest broadband in the UK over our fibre optic network and now customers can enjoy our broadband both at home and when on the move.”

To mark the launch of its new product, Virgin Media is also giving new XL home broadband customers the chance to get three months free mobile broadband if they bundle both packages. This means they can get home broadband at speeds of up to 20Mb plus mobile broadband for just £29 a month for the first three months and £44 thereafter.

Although you won’t be able to download loads of movies and TV programmes without exceeding the 3GB mobile broadband download allowance, according to Virgin Media it is enough for enough for 2,000 emails, 100 hours of surfing, 200 music tracks and 100 two minute videos. If you exceed your allowance, each additional GB costs £15.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Almost every mobile phone provider now offers a mobile broadband package so there’s some strong competition for your custom.

“Make sure that you compare other broadband providers before signing up and see if your own mobile phone provider offers a discount on its mobile broadband packages like 3 (www.Three.co.uk), or if you can find a package that comes with any added extras like O2's (www.O2.co.uk) mobile broadband which, although it costs more than most at £20 a month, now comes with free 8Mb home broadband for a year.”
