Virgin Media to boost broadband connections

Cable provider Virgin Media has announced that it will upgrade all of its current 2Mb broadband customers to its faster 10Mb service.

Wednesday, 25 February 2009 By Garnet Roach garnet@consumerchoices.co.uk

Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) recently withdrew its M Broadband package for new customers, though millions of people are still signed up to the up to 2Mb package.

"Our entry-level broadband product is now twice the speed of comparable services"

Virgin Media now offers three packages, L, XL and XXL Broadband, at speeds of up to 10Mb, 20Mb and 50Mb respectively.

Current 2Mb customers won’t be charged any extra for the upgrade and won’t have to sign a new contract.

For new customers signing up to Virgin Media’s 10Mb broadband package, the standalone monthly cost is £15 for the first six months, £20 a month thereafter. For customers bundling the L Broadband with Virgin Media’s £11 a month home phone, the cost drops to just £14 a month.

“The migration of customers from 2Mb to 10Mb is expected to take place from May and represents the largest-scale speed upgrade ever to take place in the UK,” said Virgin Media.

Neil Berkett, Virgin Media chief executive, said: “Our entry-level broadband product is now twice the speed of comparable services and, with our new 10-20-50 range, we clearly offer the highest quality broadband service in the UK.

“The migration of millions of 2Mb customers to 10Mb is only possible because of the power of our next generation network and is just one example of how we are creating exciting propositions for consumers which provide transformational experiences and go way beyond their expectations.

“Coupled with our recently launched 50Mb service, we are proactively developing the UK’s broadband market, driving consumer expectations and the demand for high speed broadband services,” he said.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “No doubt Virgin Media’s 2Mb broadband customers will be delighted to hear that they will be upgraded to the company’s significantly faster 10Mb broadband package.

“This upgrade will make internet television services such as the BBC iPlayer, Channel 4’s 4oD and even YouTube far more accessible, as well as opening up a host of other benefits that super-fast broadband can bring,” he concluded.

Virgin Media upgraded my broadband to 10mb 7days ago and since haven't had any internet connection what so ever. When i have phoned Virginmedia on several occasions they have said that the 10mb broadband isn't supported by the set top box i have and getting them to send a modem out it like trying to get blood from a stone. - Oct 13 2009 2:04PM

I have lived in Plymouth for several years now and i have always been with Virgin Media and so have most of my friends. This is mainly due to the fact that so many students live in the area and most dont want a phone line so Virgin Media is the best answer. However the speeds that are promised are never met, sure a lot of students are downloading and watching online tv but WHY state that you will get a speed of 10mb (or whatever package you are on) when you may only get this is the early hours of the morning and the rest of the time im lucky if i get 1mb. Its well known that virgin media throttle the connection at peak times but most days i struggle to watch a YouTube clip and in my opinion this just isnt good enough for a service you are paying for. I live in the PL4 area which is mainly students but even so, what is the point in offering fast speeds when all they do is throttle the connection. - Sep 18 2009 11:29PM

When will we be upgraded? The service we are currently receiving is unacceptable - it is so slow! I am seriously considering cancelling my whole package with Virgin, which is phone, TV and broadband. - Jul 26 2009 10:38AM

I was informed by email off Virgin media that my broadband had been upgraded from 2Mb to 10Mb on the 09/07/09, but there is no change in the speed i am on now then i was on before the upgrade, so what is really going on and why carn't i see a change in speed. - Jul 11 2009 1:36AM

I don't trust Virgin because of their policy of refusing to show anyone their price list. The website is indicative only. To get their best deals you have to threaten to leave them - then they will reveal the best price.

I have been informed by Virin Media customer services that on or after the 14th of May I will apply the increaed charge even if I have not been upgraded. This cannot be right.!! paying for something you don't get !! Virgin Media should not make their problem of rolling out the upgrade, by charging us before the event takes place.. Perhaps Garnet Roach can ask Virgin Media if it is morally and legaly justified in doing this. - May 6 2009 3:04PM

Virgin Media have notified me that my monthly cost will increase from £17.62 to £19. 62, yet you say that it will ve a free upgrade - May 6 2009 2:47PM

I have just been informed by virgin media that the increase from 2meg to 10 meg will incur an extra £2.00 pounds per month. The upgrade is not free!! Better to get disconnected and then re apply....prices for new customers are much better than exisitng.
Sky package seems better. Thanks a bunch Richard!!
