iPhone 12 lineup: what we know so far

Apple logo

According to rumours, the iPhone 12 will be one of four new Apple smartphones to hit shelves in 2020. Here’s everything we know about the Californian tech giant’s flagship, so far…

For all its premium allure, last year’s iPhone 11 offered little in the way of groundbreaking new features to mark it from its predecessor, the iPhone X.

Sure, it boasted an excellent dual-lens camera. The screen was a fair size. And we liked the new colorways just fine. But for the most part, it was the same Apple flagship we’ve seen since the iPhone 8: an impressive fusion of power, style and superior camera arrays. But still predictable, for all that.

Consequently, we reckon the iPhone 12 will boast a flurry of new specs and features, as well as a significant makeover, too. Here’s everything we think we know so far:

Release date and price

You’ll probably be able to pre-order it in September, around the second week. And it’ll likely ship sometime during the middle of the month. This is assuming there are no delays caused by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, of course.

In terms of price, it’s not clear at this stage how much the phone will cost but, if recent leaks are to be believed, the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max could set you back the best part of £1,149, while the standard version will fall somewhere around £600. Don’t worry, contract deals will definitely be available to make that price more manageable.

Design and display

All leaks point towards a drastic revamp for the iPhone 12, with some speculating that Apple will replace the iPhone’s trademark curved edges with sharper corners, à la the iPhone 4.

The screen on the standard iPhone will likely measure 5.4-inches; and on the Pro model, 6.7-inches. Expect OLED displays on both.

Elsewhere, it may have a smaller notch than the iPhone 11, which currently takes up most of the top of the device. Indeed, this time around, pundits reckon Apple will reduce the size of the notch to be in-line with today’s Android phones. That will mean plenty of screen space to watch movies and TV shows on the go.

As you might’ve noticed, Apple tends to make a big deal of the camera on its flagship smartphones, so we’re expecting a major upgrade to come with the iPhone 12.

To that end, we reckon the iPhone 12 will have a dual-lens camera, much like the iPhone 11, but with a few extra features. That could well include a TrueDepth lens, Time of Flight sensor and even HDR video recording.

A lot of rumours also point towards a 3D triple-lens sensing camera on the back of the phone that uses a laser to scan objects in the room for clearer pictures, and improved AR abilities.

Experts say we can be pretty sure the cameras on each phone variant will all be a little different – so maybe the Pro model will be the one with the higher grade camera tech.

5G is the talk of the tech world right now, so we figure at least one of the iPhones will feature the new technology. Indeed, gossip says that all four variations will support superfast 5G, though our money’s on it just being available on the premium model called the 12 Pro.

Other rumours point towards an under-display fingerprint sensor or, alternatively, FaceID – either of which could be true.

As for other features, we’re fairly certain that iPhone 12 will include the A14 Bionic chipset, and that a 5G capable model will most certainly run on the Qualcomm X55 modem, too.

Tech specs

At this point, much of the iPhone 12’s technical specs have come from hearsay and rumour.

However some of the sources in this article haven’t let us down in the past. With that in mind, here’s what seems most likely:

ProcessorSince previous models featured the A13, our money’s on the A14 Bionic
RAM4GB, though the premium models may have 6GB or more
Internal storageProbably a choice of 64GB or 128GB
BatteryWe’d expect at least 4,000mAh
