Broadband without a credit check

ByKim Staples
Confused and stressed chap

Got bad credit, a damaged history, or a CCJ? Sadly, that can mean you might fail a credit check, which you often need to pass to get a broadband package.

But don't worry - it's still possible to get broadband. There are providers who will connect you regardless of your credit rating. Follow our steps and you'll be online in no time.

Can I get a mobile deal without a credit check?

Try signing up anyway

First of all, you may as well try and sign up for your preferred package, even if it's from a major provider like BT, Sky, Virgin Media, or TalkTalk that requires credit checks. Use our comparison service, pick a package that looks good, and click through to sign up.

Although most of them do checks, especially as broadband packages are usually on long-term contracts, it's always worth a try. Customers get accepted to providers like BT every day even with a black financial mark against their name - there's every chance they'll throw you a bone too.

If you still get denied a connection, however, it's time to check out providers that don't do credit checks at all.

Providers that don't require credit checks

Alas, the vast majority of BT packages require credit checks, but there's one option that doesn't. BT Basic is discounted line rental designed for people who are on benefits or have low income - and you can add a bit of broadband onto that as well.

It's not exactly a hefty broadband package - your download limit is only 10GB per month - but it's better than nothing. To apply, you'll just need to give some personal details, including your date of birth and National Insurance number. See BT's website for more information on its Basic service.

Mobile broadband

Another often credit check-free option is mobile broadband. It works over 4G or 3G, the same as on your phone, and can come in the form of a dongle, mi-fi device, or personal Wi-Fi hotspot. A lot of mobile broadband works on a pay-monthly contract basis, which does still require a check - but not if you choose a pay-as-you-go option.

PAYG mobile broadband can get expensive if you use the internet a lot, but many providers also allow you to buy a bundle of data to use within 30 days - which can keep costs down. EE, for instance, offers this.
