Non-LLU broadband

ByDuncan Heaney

Even if you live somewhere that's yet to benefit from Local Loop Unbundling (LLU), you can still compare broadband from providers using a non-LLU exchange...

Non-LLU broadband providers

A handful of UK broadband providers, including Sky (www.Sky.com), have packages and plans for customers living in non-LLU areas.

If you live beyond the boundaries of Sky's network area, you can still join the supplier with Sky Connect. The package comes with a generous 40GB monthly usage limit, and you can also lump together your broadband, home phone calls and TV with Sky to help save you some money.

What is LLU broadband?

The "local loop" is a collection of wires and connections that link your home to the local telephone exchange, allowing you to make calls and access the internet.

Historically, telephone exchanges were owned and maintained by BT (www.BT.com). But deregulation in the telecoms market brought rival providers to create competition, promoting fairness and choice for consumers.

The process is known as "Local Loop Unbundling", or LLU. It allows providers to install their own equipment and offer their own broadband packages.

However, not all UK exchanges have been unbundled, and if you live in quite a remote rural area this will more likely be the case. Providers see LLU investment as being less economically viable in places with fewer potential customers.

It is usually the case that the cheapest broadband packages are only available from LLU exchanges - providers often refer to these as their "own network areas" - and you will sometimes not be eligible for cheap deals if you live in a non-LLU area.

Instead, you will have to choose from the non-LLU providers or go with BT, which offers broadband to 99% of Britain.
