Films on TV - Best packages for movie fans

ByDuncan Heaney

If your household watches a lot of films but doesn’t want to spend loads buying or renting DVDs, then you’ll want a TV package that offers the latest Hollywood hits, cult classics and family favourites.

Here at broadbandchoices, we love a good movie.

Heck, some of us love a bad movie too - give me a bucket of popcorn and a selection of 80s/90s Sylvester Stallone flicks and I'll sit there utterly content, even when my brain cells start to shut down in protest.

It's likely you have better taste, but whatever type of film's your thing, there's no shortage of options available on British TV. From the latest Hollywood blockbusters to more art-house fare, there's plenty for film buffs to watch - and you won't have to break the bank to do it.

Let's look at some of the options.

Films on Sky

If it's new films, or breadth of content, you're looking for, you'll probably want to at least consider Sky (www.Sky.com). The company has exclusive broadcast rights for some of the biggest film franchises, so new movies often come to Sky Cinema before any other TV channels.

Sky offers multiple channels too - from its Premiere and Showcase channels that highlight popular hits and relatively new blockbusters, to more genre-specific channels like Sky Drama/Romance to Sky Sci-Fi Horror.

It also has a sizable library of films available to watch on-demand, either through the TV, or on a computer, console, phone or tablet. And if you're an indecisive type andstillcan't find something to watch, you can rent movies via Sky Box Office. You'll have to pay a rental fee though.

How to get Sky Cinema

When you subscribe to Sky, you have various viewing packs to choose from.

As standard, everyone gets the Sky Entertainment Pack, which has more than 40 channels, including Sky One, Sky Atlantic, Sky Living, and Sky Arts.

To get film channels, you then have to add the Sky Cinema Pack. This gives you all of Sky's dedicated film channels and regular film premieres each week. Plus there's an extensive library of flicks available to watch whenever you want through Sky On Demand and Sky Go.

Sky Box Office, which lets you rent movies on a pay-to-view basis, is available to all Sky customers as standard.

Films on BT TV

Phone and broadband giant BT (www.BT.com) offers films through BT Vision - its on-demand service that's available through either BT YouView or a BT Vision+ set top box.

BT Vision offers a library of more than 200 films, from well-known classics, to more obscure choices. It's not a static selection - 14 new titles are swapped in each week.

In truth, you won't find as up-to-date a selection as you would from Sky Cinema, but there's no denying the breadth of BT Vision's film service.

If you do want newer movies, however, you can get some through BT Box Office.  This service requires you to rent movies on a pay-per-view basis, but often contains the latest home entertainment releases.

How to get BT Vision Films

BT offers two types of TV package: TV Essential and TV Unlimited.

BT Vision Film is only available with BT Vision Unlimited packages. For the monthly cost of the package, you get full access to the library of film.

You get access to Box Office with all TV packages - just bear in mind that you'll have to pay every time you decide to rent a movie.

Films on TalkTalk TV

In addition to the film channels available through Freeview - Film4 for example - YouView from TalkTalk (www.TalkTalk.co.uk) offers access to all 11 Sky Cinema channels for an additional monthly fee.

You can also rent new and classic films on a pay-per-view basis through LOVEFiLM box office.

How to get Sky Cinema on TalkTalk

Subscribers to TalkTalk's TV package can choose between various "boosts" that add extra channels and services for an additional monthly cost. Sky Cinema is one of these boosts, and choosing this option gives you all 11 of Sky's film-filled channels.
