It may not be long since the iPhone 7 came out, but we’re already thinking about what Apple’s next mobile might have in store for us. And the rumour mill is churning out some rather interesting whispers…
We wouldn't count on the next iPhone being called the 7S though - Apple may well bump the next model's name straight up to the iPhone 8. We're expecting some pretty big changes up from the 7, especially as it's the iPhone's 10-year birthday next year, so a proper name change may be on the cards.
Release date: September 2017, probably.
Most sources say that the next iPhone will look radically different from all iPhones before it. In fact, a lot of rumours point towards a completely bezel-free design - featuring a display that covers the entire front of the phone. Apple has patented tech that would allow the camera and sensors, including the Touch ID sensor, to exist right under the screen itself. It may even ditch the home button too.
It'll look like "a single sheet of glass" according to Bloomberg.
And don't expect it to have a headphone jack, by the way. Now that's gone, it's probably gone for good. On the other hand, it's likely that waterproofing is here to stay.
Rumours about the iPhone 7S' display are sticking with the radically different theme as well. Since the very beginning, iPhones have had LCD screens - but the time may have come for OLED to take over.
You'll find OLED displays on phones from the likes of Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola, and Huawei. They're known for having gorgeously sharp colours and crisp lines, and they tend to come in very high resolutions.
Some reports say that Apple will likely struggle to get its hands on enough OLED screens though, so the tech may be reserved just for a special pro edition of the phone.
And as for size… it could be anything. One report even says that there will be four different sizes of iPhone 7S in total: 4 inches, 4.7 inches, 5.5 inches, and 5.8 inches.
If Apple follows its usual conventions, and it probably will, the next iPhone will have iOS 11 and run on an A11 chip. We're expecting 3GB or 4GB of RAM along with that.
Many signs point towards wireless charging too - a completely glass phone would allow for it, after all - and some sources think it'll have a Smart Connector too. That's the tech that attaches Apple's Smart Keyboard to an iPad, so maybe we'll see some similar accessories for the iPhone as well.
