BT to upgrade 199 new exchanges to 20Mb broadband

BT broadband'snext round of upgrades will bring speeds of up to 20Mb to 18 million homes and businesses by spring 2011.

More than 55% of the UK has already been enabled to receive the faster speeds - a figure that will be increased by a further 17% once the next batch of exchanges have been upgraded.

BT Wholesale delivers broadband connections to 99% of the UK and its20Mb broadbandservice is already available to around 14 million customers.

The provider, which began rolling out itsBT Infinityfibre optic broadband packages in February this year, now offers speeds of up to8Mb broadband, 20Mb and40Mb broadband.

It is also trialling fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) technology - where fibre optic cables are delivered right to your home or business - in Bradwell Abbey, Milton Keynes. The technology allows BT to offer superfast broadbandspeeds of up to100Mb broadband. A second trial in Highams Park in London will start at a later date.

Michael Phillips, product director, said: "BT Wholesale is aiming to cover at 75% of the country with speeds of up to 20Mb broadband by early next year. As well as bringing faster speeds to BT customers, this will also allow other providers who use BT's network to offer their own users a broadband speed boost."
