BT Wi-Fi at the Arndale in Manchester and other retail meccas will mean free internet access on smartphones and tablets for more than 100 million shoppers.
Millions of tech-savvy shopaholics are to have free Wi-Fi access while shopping, withBT Wi-Fi providing free hotspots at eight shopping centres across the UK.
More than 118 million shoppers are set to benefit from fast broadband for their smartphone or tablet, enabling them to browse the web as they browse the rails.
Andy Baker, chief executive of BT Wi-Fi, said: "More and more shoppers are using Wi-Fi-enabled devices to log onto the internet. In fact, our research shows that 52% of people now use a tablet or smartphone when shopping."
"We already operate the largest Wi-Fi network in the UK, with more than 4.5 million hotspots, and our new partnership with PRUPIM [which owns the centres] brings this valued service to an even bigger audience - offering even greater levels of service for shoppers," he added.
Over the coming weeks, free Wi-Fi will be switched on at:
- The Arndale (Manchester)
- The Mall at Cribbs Causeway (Bristol)
- The Brunswick Centre (Scarborough)
- The Grafton Centre (Cambridge)
- Cwmbran Shopping Centre (Wales)
- The Galleries, Washington (Sunderland)
- Culver Square Shopping Centre (Colchester)
- Rams Walk Shopping Centre (Petersfield)
The Mall at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol will be the first of the eight centres to get the service on Wednesday 17 April, 2013.
While selected hotspots, including those at the above locations, are free for anyone to use, the entire BT Wi-Fi network provides free, unlimited access to BT broadband customers.
Hotspots can be found at Starbucks coffee shops, John Lewis stores, Hilton and Thistle hotels, Welcome Break motorway services and Network Rail train stations.
