Britain's average online spend is now double what it was 10 years ago, as smartphones and tablets fuel an internet shopping boom.
The internet has overtaken the high street in terms of where most people in Britain enjoy spending their money, according to new research.
In a broadbandchoices.co.uk survey of 2,000 UK adults, 36% of respondents claimed to do most of their shopping online, although 32% still prefer to shop on the high street.
One in 10 people admitted they buy something online at least once a day.
Dominic Baliszewski, telecoms expert at broadbandchoices, said: "It's no surprise to see online shopping becoming the favoured method for so many consumers. Broadband has revolutionised the way we browse - and the best deals are now usually found online.
"Years ago, shoppers would have had to trawl several different shops to check they were getting the best deal. Nowadays, with just a few clicks, you can find a list of retailers selling the item you want, compare prices and check customer reviews before you buy."
The survey also revealed that the average UK shopper now spends £113 online each month, more than double what would have been spent 10 years ago.
Separate research by O2 has shown how the internet can also influence the habits of people who do their shopping on the high street.
A survey by the mobile network operator, which operates a network of free Wi-Fi hotspots in shops and restaurants across the UK, found 58% of people regularly access wireless broadband on a tablet or smartphone while they shop.
