BT unveils ‘smaller, quieter and faster’ YouView+ box

The new, smaller YouView+ box is the quicker and slicker sibling of BT’s first YouView set-top box, and it could be yours from just £5 a month with BT broadband...

Broadband, phone and TV giant BT has launched a smaller and "sleeker" version of its YouView box, with a smart new design to match the latest BT Home Hub.

The new BT YouView+ box has the same ability as its predecessor to receive more than 120 TV and radio channels, as well as letting you pause and rewind live TV and record up to two channels at the same time.

It has a 500GB hard drive and can store up to 300 hours of recordings.

Available from today, you can get it for free with a BT TV package, which will cost you from £5 a month on a minimum 12-month contract.

Alex Green, director of BT TV, said: "The new YouView+ box from BT has all the functions and features that viewers love about the service, but it's even better. It's been a big hit with customers who've already tried it out - they've said it's smaller, quieter and faster.

"It's been designed in the style of other BT devices, so will look great in any living room."

YouView+ from BT features:

  • On-demand via BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD, Demand 5, Milkshake, Dave and NOW TV
  • Scroll back through the programme guide to catch up on the last seven days of TV
  • Record a single programme or a whole series
  • Record remotely with the YouView mobile app
  • Parental controls and PIN protection
  • Free BT Sport with BT Infinity

YouView was first launched back in July 2012 as a joint venture between broadcasters, including the BBC and ITV, and broadband providers BT and TalkTalk. It was the UK's first connected set-top box available without a subscription.

Although you can still buy a standalone YouView box from high street and online retailers like Argos, John Lewis and Amazon, it's more affordable, and often comes with extra channels and features, when bundled with broadband.

The new YouView+ box is available with all BT TV and broadband bundles, and if you've already got BT TV you can upgrade to the new box for £35.
