Boardwalk Empire season 5 will start on 13 September on Sky Atlantic

The fifth and final season of HBO’s Prohibition-era gangster drama will start on Sky Atlantic next month, and Nucky Thompson's looking to go legit. You’ll be able to watch the first four seasons on demand to whet your appetite beforehand.

Boardwalk Empire is back - but not for long. The fifth and final season of the series will be shown exclusively on Sky Atlantic, starting at 9pm on 13 September, 2014.

Set in 1931 Atlantic City, season 5 sees part-gangster, part-politician Nucky Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi, looking to go straight with the end of Prohibition nigh, by forging links with liquor companies.

Meanwhile, his rivals Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky look to cement their clout following Jewish underworld big wig Arnold Rothstein's death by wiping out the competition - however they can.

The first episode sees Nucky reminiscing about when, as a boy growing up in 1884 Atlantic City, he was noticed by the commodore. Back in 1931, he joins speakeasy owner Sally Wheet - played by Patricia Arquette - in Cuba with the aim of establishing a relationship with rum company Bacardi.

Season 5 will introduce Jim True-Frost, best known for being in The Wire, as Prohibition agent Eliot Ness, Giampiero Judica as 'boss of bosses' Salvatore Maranzano and Louis Cancelmi as fictional Al Capone enforcer Mike D'Angelo.

If you've not seen Boardwalk Empire before, or you're a big fan and want to whet your appetite before the new season premieres, you'll be able to watch seasons 1-4 on Sky On Demand from 1 September.
