Apple iPhone 6 launch: Release date and specs leak ahead of unveiling

With just hours until the Apple iPhone 6 is finally unveiled to the world, a probable release date and technical specs have appeared on a Chinese mobile network’s website. So what can we expect? Here's what...

Today's the day! Apple's expected to officially unveil the iPhone 6, arguably the most anticipated smartphone of the year, at an event in the US this evening.

As you're probably aware, the internet abounds with rumours and conjecture for months before a new Apple product is due to be launched, but one website - specifically, that of Chinese network operator China Mobile - is especially well known for its inability to keep a secret.

According to China Mobile, which usually leaks accurate information, the iPhone 6 will have a 4.7in screen and an eight megapixel camera, a similar set of hardware to the Samsung Galaxy S3, and will measure 138mm x 67mm x 7mm.

It's also said to be both water and dust-resistant, helping it compete with the accident-proofed phones of competitors Sony and Samsung.

All of this broadly backs up what's been rumoured about the iPhone 6 for a while, but one extra nugget of info is that Apple will release it on 19 September. That's if China Mobile's right about the date, which may or may not apply to the UK.

There isn't too much longer to wait in any case, Apple's due to unveil the iPhone 6 at an event in California today at 6pm (UK time). But what else might up the company's sleeve?

One of the strongest rumours at the moment is that Apple will unveil its first smartwatch, which the whole world's convinced will be called the Apple iWatch - and why wouldn't it be? - in addition to a mini iPhone 6.

If you want to watch the event, you'll be able to stream the entire keynote speech live on Apple's website from 6pm. However, you may need to be using an Apple device, like an iMac, iPad or iPhone, or at least Apple's web browser, Safari, in order for it to work.
