City of London to get ultrafast public Wi-Fi

The Square Mile in the middle of the City of London wants to get high-powered public Wi-Fi - with ultrafast speeds up to a huge 1Gb, or 1,000 megabits per second.

At the moment, free Wi-Fi in the City is provided by The Cloud - owned and operated by Sky - and although it's got reasonable download speeds, they don't come anywhere close to the 1Gb the area wants installed. For comparison, the average home broadband speed is around 30Mb.

But, like the current Cloud Wi-Fi, it'll still be available in public for anyone to connect to for free.

The City of London Corporation (CoLC) are the folks behind the plan, with the Corporation announcing yesterday that the Square Mile will get a network of 400 'small cells' - a kind of hardware that delivers broadband without taking up much space or energy.

It's a perfect piece of tech to deploy in the City, since its tall buildings, odd street patterns, and masses of concrete aren't very conducive to Wi-Fi. Small cells, on the other hand, can be installed on things like street lamps and signs.

Mark Boleat, chair of the CoLC's policy committee, said: "As the world's leading financial hub, we are thrilled to bring our wireless connectivity up to speed. At a time when other major financial centres are competing with us, the Square Mile is boosting its appeal through initiatives such as this. The new service will allow City workers to become better connected than ever before."

For now, the CoLC hasn't announced which provider will be building the network, but says all will be revealed in the next few weeks.

The Wi-Fi network will then start going live in the spring.
