Superfast broadband roll-out extended in Leicestershire

The people of Leicestershire can now look forward to the arrival of superfast speeds after the local council and BT signed a multi-million pound extension to their Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) contract.

The new £9.2million deal will provide fibre connections to a further 10,000 homes and business premises by the end of 2018. The current £18.5 million Superfast Leicestershire project is currently underway and is aims to extend network coverage to 96% of premises by this time next year.

The project has already made speeds of 24Mb or greater available to 25,000 premises and that figure is set to rise to 54,000 by March 2016. The next phase of the project will then get underway as fibre connections are extended to areas including Eastwell, Shawell, Frisby on the Wreake, Congerstone and Lockington.

The extension's been funded by the government's BDUK budget, BT, Leicestershire County Council and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership. This contract will continue to target homes that are not part of BT's own commercial roll-out.

BT Regional NGA Director, Steven Henderson said: "The Superfast Leicestershire partnership has already made fibre broadband available to tens of thousands of homes and businesses across the county.

"This has transformed the way people use the internet, the services that local businesses are able to provide, and the way that everyone can learn online. We're delighted to have been selected by the council to work with them to extend that reach even further in the coming years."
