
Virgin Media’s extended its broadband infrastructure to 50,000 homes in East London. Residents in areas including Bow, Stratford, Stepney, Poplar and East Ham can all now take advantage of the cable operator's TV, phone and superfast broadband services.
Last summer, Virgin Media announced plans to roll-out itsnetwork to 100,000 homes in dense urban areas in the capital. Now,it's reached a halfway milestone, with another 50,000 homes in thearea set to be connected before the end of 2015.
As part of its new initiative, Project Lightning, the operatorwill invest £3billion to expand its reach across the UK in othercities, including Glasgow and Sunderland. Virgin Media willeventually provide 152Mbps connections to a further four millionpremises, making a total of 17 million premises by 2020.
Virgin Media celebrated the milestone by hiring famous - afastest - henna artist, Ash Kumar, to give a makeover to one of itsmany engineering vans. The operator said the stunt would highlightthe importance of accessing superfast connections.
Virgin Media Executive Director, Neil Bartholomew said: "Workingwith Ash Kumar has been fantastic, helping us raise awareness ofthe importance of better access to the digital world. Thousandsmore homes across East London are now able to benefit for the firsttime from the UK's fastest broadband."
