Virgin Media launches special broadband for gamers

Virgin Media has announced the launch of a new broadband package, VIVID 200 Gamer, designed specially with gamers in mind. It features unlimited downloads, fast download speeds of up to 200Mb, and its fastest upload speeds available - up to 20Mb.

In comparison, its standard VIVID 200 package has upload speeds of up to 12Mb.

Better upload speeds mean lag (latency) can be a little lower; hosting a stream on Twitch is smoother; and uploading a video is far quicker - all things that are useful to gamers.

Gregor McNeil, Virgin Media's managing director of consumer, said: "VIVID 200 Gamer takes our leading ultrafast broadband to boss-mode levels. We understand the frustrations when it comes to lag, disconnects and bandwidth issues, so right from the start we wanted to design a tier that builds on our superior connectivity to give gamers and streamers what they need.

"With the fastest speeds and reliable connectivity, this is broadband built for gamers."

The package is also free of traffic management, which can slow down users' upload speeds at peak times on other Virgin Media connections.

However, a number of analysts are pretty sceptical about whether faster upload speeds will really affect latency - most multiplayer online games don't need fast upload speeds at all, and lag is more to do with how data packets are transferred rather than how much bandwidth your line has.

Still, the removal of traffic management will certainly make a difference.

VIVID 200 Gamer is available from today, 1 September, for £30 per month for the first year and £39 a month thereafter, plus £19 per month line rental. A £14.99 activation fee applies too. It's also available landline-free for £50.25 a month.
