BT launches new sim-only mobile deals

Today, BT has finally launched its first set of 4G mobile plans. You can get 4G data, inclusive minutes and unlimited texts for as little as £10 per month - or £5 if you’re an existing BT broadband customer.

At launch, BT Mobile has three sim-only plans available. As you'd expect from the owner of EE, all plans include 4G mobile data, which offers speeds up to five times faster than 3G. The new deals are:

  • BT Mobile 500MB Plan: 200 minutes of call time, unlimited texts and unlimited BT Wi-Fi.
  • BT Mobile 2GB Plan: 500 inclusive minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB data.
  • BT Mobile 20GB Plan: Unlimited calls and texts and 20GB data.

All plans include unlimited access to BT's 5 million Wi-Fi hotspots, the ability to set spending caps on all tariffs and free access to BT Sport via the BT Sport App. That means BT Mobile customers can gain free access to the BT Sport App without committing to BT Broadband.

If you are a BT broadband customer, however, you get a £5 discount on all call plans.

Contracts are 12 months, and because they're sim-only, you can't get a mobile phone bundled in. However, if you do need a new handset, you can get a £50 discount on a new phone from the BT Shop's rather limited selection.

Earlier this year, BT bought EE in a £12.5billion deal. The new deals are likely the first step towards BT eventually offering broadband, TV, home phone and mobile phone bundles, similar to Virgin Media's Big Kahuna bundle.

Dominic Baliszewski, telecoms expert here at broadbandchoices said: "BT's 4G sim-only launch is exactly the kind of shake up that was needed. Starting at just £5 per month, the pricing is very competitive for existing BT customers and confirms BT's ambitious plans to dominate quad-play before anyone else can get a foothold."
