BT Mobile now offers handsets with pay monthly contracts

BT Mobile has specialised in SIM-only plans for a while, but as of today it finally offers handsets too. The broadband, TV and mobile provider has announced that pay monthly handset plans are available from today.

The new plans let you choose from a range of mobile phones. Handsets available broadly fall into two categories: "all-rounders" and "premium" handsets.

Premium phones are flagship handsets more bells and whistles than an over-enthusiastic Morris dancer - think iPhone 6S, 6S Plus and SE (64GB model), the stunning Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, and the Sony X.

The phones in the all-rounders category are less flashy, but solid - the Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5, the iPhone 5S and SE (16GB Model) and the Sony M4 Aqua. While not as powerful or feature-rich as the premium handsets, they're all good phones and there's not a dud in the bunch. BT has chosen sensibly.

Three plans are available with the handsets:

  • Plan 1 - gives you 400 mins inclusive calls, unlimited texts and 500GB data a month
  • Plan 2 - gives you 1,000 mins calls, unlimited texts and 2GB data a month
  • Plan 3 (how did they come up with these names?) - unlimited calls, unlimited texts and a hefty 15GB data

As providers are wont to do, BT's launching some special offers alongside the plans. For example, if you sign up before 7 July, you can get a Samsung Galaxy S6 from £16 for the first three months - saving around £20 a month for that period. Alternatively, you can get the Samsung Galaxy A3 half price for six months. If you'd prefer pick an Apple, you can get £15 off the iPhone 5 for the first three months.

BT uses EE's network to deliver mobile services. It also owns it - the company's bid to buy the 4G mobile operator was approved by regulators back in February.

John Petter, the chief of BT Consumer, said: "Just over a year ago we launched some of the UK's best value SIM-only offers from just £5 a month. Now we're going one step further with our fantastic value pay monthly mobile phone contracts with extra savings for loyal BT broadband customers.

"We're offering great deals on great phones, 4G on the UK's biggest network with unlimited access to the most extensive Wi-Fi coverage via more than five million BT Wi-Fi hotspots. Plus until 7 July you can get discounts of up to 50% for six months."
