You can now control your phone with Harry Potter spells

To celebrate the launch of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Google has added a rather magical feature to its mobile app: the ability to control your phone by saying Harry Potter spells.

If you have Google Now enabled, just say 'OK Google', and then a recite spell of your choice to make your phone do stuff.

As far as we know, there are three spells you can cast:

  • Lumos - turns your torch on
  • Nox - turns it off again
  • Silencio - puts your phone on silent mode

Google has also added a fun mode to Street View, which lets you explore New York in the time of Newt Scamander. Search for 'fantastic beasts' in New York City on Google Maps, and you'll see four locations to explore just as they were in 1926 - or how the movie imagines they probably were, of course.

There's the MACUSA headquarters, the Magical Congress of the USA; Steen National Bank; The Blind Pig, an underground speakeasy; and the apartment of characters Tina and Queenie Goldstein.

Stick on a Daydream View headset, Google says, and you can even explore the area, find clues, solve puzzles, and perhaps find some of those elusive fantastic beasts. It's safe to say the feature will be sticking around for at least a few weeks then, considering that Daydream View isn't even out yet.

All the magical Harry Potter features work on the Google Now app, and on Google Maps or Street View on mobile, tablet, and desktop.
