The British public has voted for its favourite British sitcom of the 21st century in a Radio Times poll, and leading the way is Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown’s Boys.

The top three is rounded out with Ricky Gervais' seminal sitcom The Office and Peter Kay's Car Share. Two of Graham Linehan's creations, Count Arthur Strong and The IT Crowd, make up the top five.

Radio Times critics and members of the British Film Institute compiled a shortlist of 40 shows, and then passed it over to the public to vote for the one that tickled us the most.

So, the nation's favourite sitcoms of the century so far are:

1. Mrs Brown's Boys
2. The Office
3. Peter Kay's Car Share
4. Count Arthur Strong
5. The IT Crowd
6. The Thick Of It

Brendan O'Carroll, who plays the eponymous Mrs Brown, was delighted at the news. "Lost for words… and that doesn't happen to me very often," he said.

"There is an audience out there that comedy forgot - that Are You Being Served? audience has been left behind. Us winning this award proves that."
