About Sky Cinema

Sky Cinema ( - formerly known as Sky Movies - has been going since 1989, and today it’s a movie buff’s dream. Once upon a time it was a single channel on Sky TV, but since then it’s expanded, and you can now get it with a number of other TV providers too. Packed with everything from Hollywood blockbusters to cult indie hits, you’re bound to find something good to watch. So grab a bucket of popcorn and take a look at what Sky Cinema is all about.

What do I get with Sky Cinema?

11 channels that show nothing but films all day every day, and over 1,000 movies on demand, will satisfy even the pickiest of film fans. They cover a load of different genres, so you’ll have something to watch whether you’re a sci-fi geek, in the mood for a classic, or want to keep the kids entertained.

Sky Cinema's biggest selling point is that it has exclusive rights to some of the latest blockbusters - a lot of them arrive up to 12 months before other TV channels get them. A new one is added every single day so you’re guaranteed to be up to date with all the flicks your mates are talking about.

Not only does it give you a lot of films, they’re in fantastic quality too. Enhanced HD is included for Sky TV customers, and audio is incredible, even if you’re watching on-demand. You’ll need a HD TV and good speakers to make the most of that, of course.

A subscription will also give you access to Sky Go, letting you log in from your laptop, phone, or tablet and watch movies on demand wherever you are. Sky Cinema has its own dedicated app too - download it and you can browse movie listings, set your Sky Q box to record, and create a personal shortlist of films you want to watch.

How do I get Sky Cinema?

Well, the most obvious way is with a Sky TV package. It’s easy to add a Sky Cinema subscription when you first sign up - and you can strike a deal on broadband and phone too while you’re at it. Or if you’ve already got Sky TV at home, you can add Sky Cinema at any time on a monthly subscription.

Virgin Media offers three different bundles as add-ons to your TV package: Sky Cinema 1 (Comedy, Select, Family, Drama and Romance, Greats), Sky Cinema 2 (Comedy, Select, Sci fi and Horror, Action and Adventure, Crime and Thriller), or Sky Cinema Collection (all channels for a reduced price). The Big Kahuna Movies and VIP bundles both come with the full suite ready-included too.

TalkTalk offers ‘boosts’ on top of its standard TV package, and the Sky Cinema Boost is one of them. All 11 channels are included in a monthly rolling subscription that you can start and stop at any time.

BT TV offers Sky Cinema on demand as a 'Bolt-on', meaning you can add or remove your subscription on a month-to-month basis. And if you get BT Infinity, subscribing to Sky Cinema will also get you the 11 live channels.

If you’ve got a Smart TV, games console, or streaming box, chances are you’ve got the Now TV app available on it - another way of purchasing a monthly Sky Cinema pass.

What channels can I get?

There are 11 Sky Cinema channels altogether: Premiere, Showcase, Greats, Disney, Family, Action and Adventure, Comedy, Drama and Romance, Crime and Thriller, Sci fi and Horror, and Select. Sky sometimes adds temporary channels too, like Sky Cinema Christmas during the seasonal months, and you can always opt for HD as well.

Exactly which channels you get, however, depends on your provider and the package you choose.

And don’t forget that all the movies showing on the channels you subscribe to will be available on demand too - whether that’s through your TV or the Sky Go app.
