Talkmobile

Walk along any high street worth its salt and you’ll see the storefront of a mobile network or two - but not Talkmobile. Its SIM-only plans and mobile contracts can only be found online.

Launched in 2007 by Carphone Warehouse and based in Berkshire, Talkmobile is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) that piggybacks on Vodafone's network. It takes the money that it saves by not having high street stores and injects it right back into its customer base - meaning it's able to offer amazing value on its mobile plans. Those plans are easy to understand too, so you know exactly what you're getting without any confusing jargon.

Overall Talkmobile is pretty keen on making things easier for you, the customer - it's created a powerful customer service team, and is invested in making upgrades straightforward when your contract runs out (or if you just fancy a change).

Talkmobile plans and tariffs

There are three main SIM plans on offer:

  • Small - 100 minutes, 5000 texts, and 100MB data per month, 12 months
  • Medium - 1000 minutes, 5000 texts, and 1GB data per month, 12 months
  • Large - 3000 minutes, 5000 texts, and 2GB data per month, 12 months

The price of each plan then varies depending on what handset you choose, or if you go SIM-only.

Although Small, Medium, and Large are Talkmobile's main deals, others are available too - including 30-day plans, and the X-Large plan for particularly heavy users. If commitment isn't your bag, there's also a pay-as-you-go SIM on offer.

What phones can you get from Talkmobile?

Talkmobile's range of handsets isn't very large, but it spreads pretty wide. You'll find budget handsets like the Motorola Moto E, right through to the latest iPhones - though most of its stock is in the mid-range market, like the Samsung Galaxy A3. A lot of flagship models are refurbished too, bringing their costs down even lower.

Talkmobile coverage

Since it shares Vodafone's network, Talkmobile coverage ain't half bad - more than 99% of the UK population is covered. 3G coverage is a little more scant than that, alas, and 4G isn't available yet.

What's good about Talkmobile?

  • Good value, easy-to-understand plans, in a good range to suit everyone
  • Wide coverage, since it uses Vodafone's network
  • Dedicated to providing good customer service, including special help teams
  • Easy to upgrade to another good deal
  • 30-day and 12-month plans both available

What's bad about Talkmobile?

  • No 4G just yet
  • Fairly small range of handsets available compared to other networks
  • Not really any extras or perks, like the free Wi-Fi hotspot access or priority tickets offered by other networks
  • No real options for very heavy users - you can't get plans with unlimited texts or large data allowances, for instance
