Virgin Media packages - What can I get?

Good old Virgin Media ( has got it all. Since it’s a ‘quad-play’ provider, you can bundle broadband, TV, home phone, and mobile together - and there are lots of options to choose from. Broadband, mobile, and all but one of its TV packages are available as standalone contracts on their own too, so it’s no problem to pick and choose the bits you want.

All Virgin Media packages are available on either 12-month contracts or on a 30-day rolling basis. Longer contracts cost less per month, but 30-day ones can be cancelled at any time.

Virgin Media broadband

Virgin Media has its own network of fibre optic cables, meaning its super speedy broadband is available either bundled with other services or on its own, landline-free. There are four different packages available:

  • VIVID 50 - average download speed of 54Mb
  • VIVID 100 - average download speed of 108Mb
  • VIVID 200 - average download speed of 213Mb
  • VIVID 350 - average download speeds of 362Mb

All have unlimited downloads, so you needn’t worry about hitting a usage cap. However, Virgin Media manages web traffic, meaning your connection may slow at peak times.

You’ll also get a ton of extras thrown in, including a Virgin Media Super Hub, internet security in the form of Web Safe and F-Secure SAFE virus protection, 10 free email addresses, and access to Wi-Fi on the London Underground.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I switch to a new TV service?
Switching TV services is a breeze if you use a comparison service like ours. Simply enter your postcode, and we’ll list all your different options side by side, so you can easily compare features and price. When you find a package you like, click the link and you’ll be taken straight to the provider’s site. Once you're all set to go live, contact your old TV provider and ask to cancel your current service. Fast, simple and hassle-free.
  2. How do I switch broadband provider?

The process of changing your broadband provider is actually pretty straightforward. First, you put your postcode into our impartial comparison tool. We’ll display the broadband, phone and TV deals available where you live, and then you can use our search filters to narrow down the options and find the perfect package for your household. Finally, you sign up with your new provider online. They’ll contact your existing provider and take care of everything else for you (unless you're switching to or from Virgin Media).

The actual switch should be virtually seamless, and in the vast majority of cases it is. Your new broadband provider will send you all the stuff you need to get set up, like a new wireless router and/or TV set-top box.

For more info, see our guide: How to switch broadband

  3. How long does it take to switch broadband?
When you sign up to a new provider, they’ll contact your existing one and request a transfer of your service. The only exception is when you're switching to or from Virgin Media, in which case you'll have to call and cancel. While switching times vary depending on the type of package, it shouldn’t usually take more than 10 working days. It can take longer if you don’t currently have a phone line, as an engineer will need to come out and install one for you.
  4. Do I need fibre optic broadband?

Fibre optic broadband is much faster and much more reliable than broadband through the phone line, but it’s not essential for everyone. If you just want to browse the web, check email, Facebook, Twitter etc, you’ll be fine with standard broadband through the phone line.

However, if you stream a lot of video, download music, films and games, and other such activities, you will likely find a fibre connection hugely beneficial.

It’s also a boon for large households, especially ones with lots of gadgets like smartphones, tablets, and computers connected up most of the time. The more people using a connection, the slower it will be, so if you have a big family where lots of people want to connect to the web at the same time, for example, a fibre connection will ensure everyone can get a good experience.

  5. Can I save money by bundling TV, phone and broadband?
Yes you can. Providers like Sky and Virgin Media offer competitively priced bundles, comprising broadband, home phone and TV, and getting all three services from the same place often leads to significant savings. It also makes it easier to manage finances, as all services come on a single bill.
  6. Can I keep my email address if I change provider?
This depends entirely on who your current provider is. If your email address is from BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, or Plusnet, you'll still have access to your emails at least temporarily - but we'd suggest changing over to a free service like Gmail or Outlook so you don't need to worry about losing all your emails just for switching broadband. See our guide for more info.
  7. Can I keep my phone number if I switch provider?

Yes, you can normally keep your existing number if you switch from one provider to another. However if you're a cable customer or need a new line, you may need to get a new one.

For everything you need to know, see our guide: Can I keep my phone number?

  8. Why can’t I get Virgin Media?
Virgin Media has its own separate cable network to deliver the provider’s broadband, phone and TV services, which now covers more than half of the UK. If you live in a town or city, or at least a built-up suburb of one, then chances are you’ll have access to Virgin Media. The network is always growing, though, so if you can’t get it now, that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to get it in the future. Enter your postcode into our comparison tool to find out if Virgin Media is available where you live.
