Broadband options
Broadband type Fixed-line broadband is available either as standard (ADSL) broadband, or fibre optic. Fibre optic broadband is much faster and more reliable, but it isn’t available everywhere and can cost more.
Monthly usage allowance The amount you download determines the broadband package you should get. To keep things simple, we ask if you would like to see packages which are unlimited. These packages are ideal for users who are online for several hours during the day, or use the internet extensively for entertainment - like downloading movies and TV, streaming entertainment, or playing games. They are also good for large households where several people go online at the same time. If that sounds like you, pick ‘Just unlimited’.
Minimum speed Your broadband speed determines how fast web pages load, files are downloaded, the time streaming video takes to buffer, and more. For a big household, or one where you stream lots of video or play games, a fast speed is recommended

*Average speeds are based on the download speeds of at least 50% of customers at peak time (8pm to 10pm). Speed can be affected by a range of technical and environmental factors. The speed you receive where you live may be lower than that listed above. You can check the estimated speed to your property prior to purchasing.

Fibre/cable services at your postcode are subject to availability. You can confirm availability on the provider's website.

Providers may increase charges. You should have the right to exit your contract without penalty if this happens.

Christmas is over. We’ve stuffed our stockings and our bellies, and now it’s time to think about the New Year.

One of the most awesome things about January is, of course, the sales - and broadband is no exception. Internet providers typically offer exciting discounts, free gifts, super-cheap options and more. Brilliantly, switching to one of these January deals doesn’t just save you money now - it can cut your monthly bill for months, or even for a whole year in some cases!

We’ve found some of the best deals running this year. Take a look - but be quick if you want to switch because many of these will only be available for a short time.

How to choose broadband

What can I get in the broadband January sales?

A nice range of providers are offering special deals this January. The best way to find out what you can get is to enter your postcode above - but here's a quick idea of what you can expect.

  • ADSL broadband - The cheapest broadband deals of all will be on basic ADSL broadband. It's nice and low in price, though it doesn't give you the fastest download speeds.
  • Fibre optic broadband - Fibre is far faster, but a little more expensive. With the January broadband sales, however, you can bring that price right down and grab a bargain.
  • Broadband + TV bundles - Click 'add TV' on the comparison table and you'll see all the January deals that also include pay-TV. It's a great time of year to nab a new set-top box and some premium channels at a great price.
  • Home phone - Almost all broadband includes line rental, which means you can get a fab deal on a calls package as well.

  1. How do I switch broadband provider?

The process of changing your broadband provider is actually pretty straightforward. First, you put your postcode into our impartial comparison tool. We’ll display the broadband, phone and TV deals available where you live, and then you can use our search filters to narrow down the options and find the perfect package for your household. Finally, you sign up with your new provider online. They’ll contact your existing provider and take care of everything else for you (unless you're switching to or from Virgin Media).

The actual switch should be virtually seamless, and in the vast majority of cases it is. Your new broadband provider will send you all the stuff you need to get set up, like a new wireless router and/or TV set-top box.

For more info, see our guide: How to switch broadband

  2. Can I keep my email address if I change provider?
This depends entirely on who your current provider is. If your email address is from BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, or Plusnet, you'll still have access to your emails at least temporarily - but we'd suggest changing over to a free service like Gmail or Outlook so you don't need to worry about losing all your emails just for switching broadband. See our guide for more info.
  3. Can I save money by bundling TV, phone and broadband?
Yes you can. Providers like Sky and Virgin Media offer competitively priced bundles, comprising broadband, home phone and TV, and getting all three services from the same place often leads to significant savings. It also makes it easier to manage finances, as all services come on a single bill.
  4. Do I need fibre optic broadband?

Fibre optic broadband is much faster and much more reliable than broadband through the phone line, but it’s not essential for everyone. If you just want to browse the web, check email, Facebook, Twitter etc, you’ll be fine with standard broadband through the phone line.

However, if you stream a lot of video, download music, films and games, and other such activities, you will likely find a fibre connection hugely beneficial.

It’s also a boon for large households, especially ones with lots of gadgets like smartphones, tablets, and computers connected up most of the time. The more people using a connection, the slower it will be, so if you have a big family where lots of people want to connect to the web at the same time, for example, a fibre connection will ensure everyone can get a good experience.

  5. Can I get broadband without a phone line?
Cable giant Virgin Media is the only major UK provider to offer broadband without a telephone line. Its fibre optic network is completely separate from the copper phone wire network that ordinarily connects you to the web. Aside from this, the only alternative is to use mobile broadband instead - then you have no requirement for a landline. But, if your internet use is anything other than particularly light, this might just prove to be too slow or too restrictive to need your needs.

  6. Can I keep my phone number if I switch provider?

Yes, you can normally keep your existing number if you switch from one provider to another. However if you're a cable customer or need a new line, you may need to get a new one.

For everything you need to know, see our guide: Can I keep my phone number?
