Broadband options
Broadband type Fixed-line broadband is available either as standard (ADSL) broadband, or fibre optic. Fibre optic broadband is much faster and more reliable, but it isn’t available everywhere and can cost more.
Monthly usage allowance The amount you download determines the broadband package you should get. To keep things simple, we ask if you would like to see packages which are unlimited. These packages are ideal for users who are online for several hours during the day, or use the internet extensively for entertainment - like downloading movies and TV, streaming entertainment, or playing games. They are also good for large households where several people go online at the same time. If that sounds like you, pick ‘Just unlimited’.
Minimum speed Your broadband speed determines how fast web pages load, files are downloaded, the time streaming video takes to buffer, and more. For a big household, or one where you stream lots of video or play games, a fast speed is recommended

*Average speeds are based on the download speeds of at least 50% of customers at peak time (8pm to 10pm). Speed can be affected by a range of technical and environmental factors. The speed you receive where you live may be lower than that listed above. You can check the estimated speed to your property prior to purchasing.

Fibre/cable services at your postcode are subject to availability. You can confirm availability on the provider's website.

Providers may increase charges. You should have the right to exit your contract without penalty if this happens.

How to get broadband with free installation

We love a good cheap broadband deal, and it doesn't get any cheaper than free. If you'd rather not splash out too much money today, a broadband deal with free installation and no setup costs is what you need. Here's everything you need to know about finding a package and signing up.

Broadband deals with no upfront costs and free installation

Finding these deals is easy: just use our postcode checker.

Enter your postcode into the box above, and we'll show you everything you can get in your area. To see all the deals with free installation, make sure you sort the results by setup costs using the toggle at the top. Deals that come with free installation and no setup costs will show up first, followed by ones with the lowest upfront costs of all.

Sometimes packages come with free installation but carry an upfront charge for other things - such as delivery of the router. However, our comparison table bundles all setup costs together, so you can really see which packages will charge you the least money upfront.

Will I still get a wireless router?

Yes. Just about every single broadband package comes with a free router included, so you can connect your gadgets to Wi-Fi - even on deals with nothing to pay upfront.

Heads up: some free installation deals do require you to return the router to the provider when you end your contract with them. Be prepared to hand it back, and don't get rid of the router you're given, or you may face a fee.

Which broadband providers offer free installation?

Exactly which providers offer broadband packages with free installation at any time can vary - but deals are pretty much always available. Some providers have free installation all the time; some only offer it on certain packages; and others just occasionally run special no-upfront-cost deals for a limited time.

Broadband providers that have been known to offer free installation include:

Of course, not all of them will offer free installation right now, and some providers may not be available in your area. That's why it's so important to check your postcode for what you can currently get.

Can I get fibre optic broadband with free installation?

Yes, you can. Providers are more likely to charge for fibre installation than they are for standard ADSL broadband installation, but fibre packages with free setup costs certainly are available.

Look out for fibre deals with no upfront costs from some of the providers above - such as TalkTalk and Plusnet.

Can I get a TV package with free installation?

It's a bit rarer, but it is possible to get pay-TV with free installation. TV packages with no setup costs are usually only offered as special limited time deals - especially ones with broadband bundled in - so if you spot one, snap it up fast.

You're more likely to find TV deals with low setup costs, often just £20 or less.

Again, bear in mind that a TV package with no upfront cost may require you to return the equipment to the provider when you end your contract.

I don't have a phone line

Haven't got a phone line connected to your property at all? Need one installed from scratch? Unfortunately, you'll be charged for this in the majority of cases, even if you get a package with free installation. This charge is generally between £20-60 if you sign up to a long-term package, depending on the provider.

Virgin Media, meanwhile, doesn't charge anything extra to install a line in your home when you sign up to its services - provided you're in its covered area, of course.

For more info, see our guide to broadband line installation.

  1. How do I switch broadband provider?

The process of changing your broadband provider is actually pretty straightforward. First, you put your postcode into our impartial comparison tool. We’ll display the broadband, phone and TV deals available where you live, and then you can use our search filters to narrow down the options and find the perfect package for your household. Finally, you sign up with your new provider online. They’ll contact your existing provider and take care of everything else for you (unless you're switching to or from Virgin Media).

The actual switch should be virtually seamless, and in the vast majority of cases it is. Your new broadband provider will send you all the stuff you need to get set up, like a new wireless router and/or TV set-top box.

For more info, see our guide: How to switch broadband

  2. Can I keep my email address if I change provider?
This depends entirely on who your current provider is. If your email address is from BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, or Plusnet, you'll still have access to your emails at least temporarily - but we'd suggest changing over to a free service like Gmail or Outlook so you don't need to worry about losing all your emails just for switching broadband. See our guide for more info.
  3. Can I get broadband without a phone line?
Cable giant Virgin Media is the only major UK provider to offer broadband without a telephone line. Its fibre optic network is completely separate from the copper phone wire network that ordinarily connects you to the web. Aside from this, the only alternative is to use mobile broadband instead - then you have no requirement for a landline. But, if your internet use is anything other than particularly light, this might just prove to be too slow or too restrictive to need your needs.

    See broadband-only deals here
  4. Can I keep my phone number if I switch provider?

Yes, you can normally keep your existing number if you switch from one provider to another. However if you're a cable customer or need a new line, you may need to get a new one.

For everything you need to know, see our guide: Can I keep my phone number?

  5. Can I save money by bundling TV, phone and broadband?
Yes you can. Providers like Sky and Virgin Media offer competitively priced bundles, comprising broadband, home phone and TV, and getting all three services from the same place often leads to significant savings. It also makes it easier to manage finances, as all services come on a single bill.
