Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra at a glance
As Samsung’s flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is arguably the best handset you can buy as of 2023.
Its headline feature is its 200MP wide lens camera, with a further three lenses on hand to help take amazing images. There’s the same eyeball popping 6.8-inch display as found on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but under that screen it’s all change, thanks to a super fast new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and more RAM.
Throw in Android 13, with further updates available for five more years and a rock solid design and you’ve got a phone designed to give the iPhone 14 Pro Max a run for its money.

Design
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with an identical design to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. There’s an aluminium frame, with a toughened glass screen and rear to stop any bumps and scrapes, plus an IP68 rating meaning it can handle extensive splashes of water.
The curved 6.8-inch screen is striking and comes with some serious chops, including Dynamic AMOLED tech and 120Hz refresh rate.
Camera
The camera is what sets the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra apart from all of its rivals and even the standard Galaxy S23. It has a 200MP wide angle main camera, with a 12MP ultrawide and two 10MP telephoto cameras, one with 10x optical zoom and the other with 3x optical zoom.
Samsung says this setup, paired with software powered night modes, will deliver amazing low light imaging and even perfect shots of the night sky. Being a top end phone it has an Expert RAW mode that allows keen snappers to take and edit top notch 50MP pictures.
Video recording stretches to 8K and 4K, while the front facing camera comes in at 12MP.
Specs
The specs of the Galaxy S23 Ultra are best in class. As well as running a specially-made Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy chipset, you can get 8GB of RAM on the 256GB model, rising to 12GB of RAM on the 512GB and 1TB editions (a 256GB/12GB can also be bought from Samsung).
This all goes towards creating a device that operates at the top level, with lightning fast transitions and great overall performance. Adreno graphics deliver amazing gameplay and the 120Hz screen refresh rate is built for streaming video.
In terms of software, the Galaxy S23 Ultra packs Android 13 and Samsung’s own One UI on top. That means breezy performance, with Samsung saying it will keep the S23 Ultra up to date for another five years.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra worth buying in 2024?
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is definitely worth buying at its 2023 launch date, and for several years beyond. Only the very best iPhones can match it in terms of overall specs and performance while its camera is the best around on a smartphone.
And with years of updates to come, it’s an investment as well as a cutting edge piece of tech.
