Having established a firm foothold in the value smartphone market, the P20 Pro sees Huawei stake its claim to a place at the mobile top table - without the flagship price tag.
A striking design, high-end specs and an innovative camera function see this classy phone going head to head against more expensive premium handsets, from the likes of Apple and Samsung.
It’s no overstatement to call the P20 Pro easy on the eye. With its polished metal frame, glass rear and smooth, rounded shell, it positively shimmers in the hand - particularly the Twilight and Pink Gold editions. As is the current vogue, the P20 Pro is big, too, with a large 6.1-inch screen, but not so massive it will stick out of your pocket. And while the glass rear can be a little slippery, when you’re holding something so beautiful, that feels a little picky.
Specs and features
Its Kirin 970 octo-core processor (like the Huawei Mate 10 Pro) and 6GB of RAM mean you’re assured of a fast and powerful performance whatever your multi-tasking demands, from downloading media to gaming to watching video.
Let’s take a look at what else you can expect from the P20 Pro:
In the race to maximise screen real estate, the lowly bezel has found itself hunted down, cornered and truly sidelined. Continuing this trend, there’s plenty of space here to capture that perfect selfie. And while the P20 Pro’s bright and sharp 6.1-inch full HD+ OLED screen won’t quite hit the heights of the iPhone XR, this is still a stunning display.
Sharp intake of breath… three cameras! Now that may seem excessive but the longer you spend using the Leica Triple Camera: 40-megapixel, 20-megapixel and 8-megapixel 3x telephoto lens, the more it makes sense. Forget about any low-light problems, this is a smartphone that has truly stretched the limits of smartphone photography - and image quality is quite superb.
Battery & storage
Even if your day-to-day takes in 3D gaming, music streaming and some HD video, the P20 Pro’s huge 4,000mAh battery should see you right on a single charge. There’s also a host of power-saving features to help keep you juiced up. As with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, you get 128GB of storage, but unfortunately no microSD card slot to top up.
Decent without pushing any boundaries sums up the audio performance of the P20 Pro. You’ll find dual speakers with plenty of punch, which only start to distort in the upper range. However, there’s no headphone jack socket, so if you’re resolutely resisting the onslaught of Bluetooth headphones, look elsewhere.
Considering all the superlatives one can liberally throw around when describing the P20 Pro, it’s a surprise that you can pick one up for under £700. This feels like a very reasonable price tag when you consider its revolutionary camera functionality and premium good looks.
What’s the cheapest Huawei P20 Pro deal?
Although the P20 isn’t cheap, there are ways you can manage the cost and avoid paying out heaps of money in one go.
Firstly, make sure you compare - offers change regularly, and it's always worth checking to see which mobile operator has the best deal right now.
It's also worth checking out mobile resellers rather than going through a network directly. They typically sell the same plans on those operators, but at a more competitive price.
Which networks sell the Huawei P20 Pro?
Here’s where you’ll find the best P20 Pro deals:
EE - for a phone contract, SIM-Only, or mobile broadband deal? EE have a huge selection, and you’re bound to find what you’re looking for.
O2 - O2 have loads offers for existing customers, with a wide selection of plans available.
Vodafone - Vodafone offer a shed-load of pay monthly plans, SIM-Only offers, and 'Red' 4G plans.
Three - Whether you’re after a phone contract, SIM-only plan, or unlimited data plans, you’ll be spoilt for choice with Three.
You could also trade in your current Huawei smartphone and put the money towards one of the newer models. You can do this via mobile recycling comparison sites like CompareMyMobile or SellMyMobile. Depending on what model you have, and how intact it is, you’ll be surprised at what you can get.
